HE Parks Offers Free Sunscreen in Parks and at Pool

Thanks to the Hoffman Estates Park District (HE Parks) and Pinnacle Dermatology of Hoffman Estates, visitors to several of the Hoffman Estates parks won’t have to worry about the consequences of forgetting their sunscreen when they’re out at the parks, at Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club or at Seascape Family Aquatic Center. That’s because the two organizations have partnered to place sunscreen dispensers at select parks and facilities.

Sunscreen lotion with SPF 30 is recommended by dermatologists to protect skin from sun exposure. Too much exposure to the sun can cause melanoma or skin cancer. In fact, only three sunburns can increase the chances of an individual of being diagnosed with melanoma by 65%. Read More »

Free Mulch Available to Home Gardeners

Need mulch for your garden and landscaping this year? While it lasts, the park district is giving away free mulch to home gardeners. The mulch is self-service, so you must bring your own shovels, containers, etc and load it into your vehicle. 

The mulch is wood chips used as “fall material” in our playgrounds for safety, that has since been replaced with new mulch.

Mulch is available in the parking lots at the following locations:

Triphahn Center
Cannon Crossings Park
Willow Recreation Center
South Ridge Park


Figure Skater Pursuing the Road to Nationals

The Hoffman Estates Park District’s (HE Parks) figure skating academy Coach Ryan Bedard of McHenry has been having great success and is moving on to national competitions in not just one but two categories – singles and pairs.

At the young age of 17 ,he quickly has advanced through the ranks in figure skating competitions. He made it to the 2018 US Nationals Dec. 29-Jan. 7, 2018 in San Jose, California and is working on making it to Nationals again in 2019. To do this he will need to place in the top four at regionals and the top four at sectionals to qualify for US Nationals. The national competition is in Detroit, Michigan Jan. 19-27, 2019. He currently practices 25 hours per week in pursuit of his goals. Read More »

Students Can Get Fit, Stay Fit All Summer

College students age 18-25 can stay fit over the summer with a summer fitness pass at  Prairie StoneTM Sports & Wellness Center (PSSWC) located at 5050 Sedge Blvd.  Summer fitness passes are now on sale for $129, or $99 for students of PSSWC members.

Amenities at PSSWC include unlimited use of cardiovascular and strength training equipment, gymnasiums, indoor track, climbing wall, indoor aquatic center, and participation in all group fitness classes. In addition to PSSWC, the fitness pass gives students access to the fitness centers at the Triphahn Center and Willow Recreation Center.

Kids Can Learn To Fish at Hoffman Parks

The Hoffman Estates Park District is fishing for local kids age 6-14 who are interested in learning the sport of fishing. This new program will teach kids how to cast, tie knots and safely release fish. Two sessions are offered that run June 7-30 and July 5-28 on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 8-10 a.m.; classes will be at different lakes throughout Hoffman Estates each week. Get Fit Without the Commit!

Finding time to fit in a fitness class or sports league is a real challenge for busy adults. Balancing the schedules of family, work, and friends can be difficult enough, let alone committing time for working out or playing sports. If this sounds familiar, HE Parks has a solution. The park district offers a variety of drop-in fitness classes and sports programs that allow participants to pay a one-time fee for each session they attend. Seascape Wins Safety Award

HE Parks was recently recognized for exceptional 4-Star aquatic safety performance for 2017 at its Seascape Family Aquatic Center (1300 Moon Lake Blvd), in Hoffman Estates.

Golf With a Celebrity at the HE Parks’ Foundation Golf Outing

Bridges of Poplar Creek Country ClubGolfers have the chance to golf with a former celebrity athlete and help raise funds for a great cause at the annual Scott R. Triphahn Celebri-Tee Golf Outing on Wednesday, June 6. All proceeds benefit the Hoffman Estates Park District’s (HE Parks) Foundation, d.b.a. Friends of HE Parks, which provides families in need with scholarships to use on programs and classes at HE Parks.

A former professional athlete will be teamed up with each foursome. Golfers will spend a day on the course with celebrities such as Bill Campbell and Paul Popovich from the Cubs, Eric Soderholm from the White Sox, Gene Hiser from the Cubs and White Sox plus many more. The event begins with registration at 11 a.m. and a shotgun start at 1 p.m. at Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club in Hoffman Estates. Read More »

HE Parks Now Offering Sunday Open Court Basketball

Boys and girls ages 6-17 are invited to play open basketball for free through the USA Basketball Open Court program and the Hoffman Estates Park District. Each Sunday morning through June 24 at the Triphahn Center at 1685 W. Higgins Rd., volunteer coaches from the park district’s youth basketball program will be on the sidelines to facilitate informal games and drills.
