What is Perry Weather?

Perry Weather is a state-of-the-art weather safety platform that provides 24/7 monitoring of lightning and severe weather conditions. Unlike traditional weather apps that rely on broad regional data, Perry Weather uses on-site sensors to provide hyperlocal, real-time information, monitoring weather patterns up to 48 hours in advance, specifically for our locations. Learn more at their website: Perry Weather.

How Does it Work?

When the Perry Weather system detects lightning or severe weather within a specific radius of our facilities, it automatically triggers a series of alerts to keep everyone safe:

  • Notifications are sent in real-time to HEParks staff alerting them of severe weather.
  • Audible Sirens: A loud, 15-second horn blast will sound to signal that weather conditions are unsafe and everyone must seek shelter immediately.
  • Visual Strobes: High-visibility strobe lights will flash continuously while a weather alert is active.
  • The “All-Clear”: Once the system determines that no lightning has been detected for 30 minutes, it will sound three short horn blasts and the strobes will turn off, signaling that it is safe to resume outdoor activities.
  • Text-to-Speech PA: Clear, automated voice instructions may be broadcast to provide specific guidance on where to go.

What Happened to the Previous System?

HEParks formally used Thor Guard, which has since discontinued serving current models of their remote sensors we use, which doesn’t allow us to access to replacement parts or technical support. This provided HEParks the opportunity to upgrade to a better, more modern service. As weather in Illinois can change in an instant, we felt it was vital to keep our residents safe by using the most up-do-date technology to remove the guesswork from weather safety. This system is trusted by the PGA of America and professional sports teams because it offers the most accurate lightning detection available, helping us avoid “false alarms” while ensuring we never miss a real threat.
