Free Mulch Available to Community

April 19, 2017: The mulch is available at Triphahn Center, Willow Recreation Center and Cannon Crossings Park, while supplies last. The Hoffman Estates Park District (HE Parks) free mulch is offering the community for use around residential landscaping. The mulch consists of 50% wood chips and 50% hummus and aids in retaining moisture and adds nutrients to the soil as it breaks down.

Residents interested in using the mulch should bring their own containers and shovels and load it themselves from the pile at several locations throughout in Hoffman Estates, including: Willow Recreation Center, Triphahn Center,  and Cannon Crossings.

Approximately 500 yards of mulch will be available throughout the summer. The mulch was previously used by the park district as “fall material” placed beneath playground equipment to protect children upon impact of falling. The park district is replacing the fall material with a fresh supply as a safety measure. The old material is being offered for public use in residential gardens as an alternative to having the waste shipped to an organic waste facility. Shipping would require 45 trucks to transport the material to a location in rural Illinois at a cost of $35,000.

“Keeping the materials local is a greener way to use it,” said Gary Buczkowski, Director of Planning and Development. “It saves the park district money; it saves our residents money and eliminates the environmental impact of transporting 45 truckloads.”

The park district is using the material around landscaping at the parks’ facilities. “But there is plenty enough to share with the community,” said Buczkowski.
