Skates and sticks…

your tools for success!

In order to fully enjoy the great game of hockey you must master the 5 major skills (skating, stick-handling, passing, shooting and safe checking) your skates and stick must be ideal suited to your capabilities.

Skates:  Proper support is key. Sloppy ankles equates to instability and inconsistent edges. Skates need to fit snug with slight movement at the heel and toe not quite touching the end of the boot. Many skates are purchased far to big. A rule of thumb is that skates will usually fit 1 1/2 sizes smaller than your shoe size. Also, if you can move the laces of the skates once they are tied up, they are likely too loose.

Hockey stick: The surgeon’s tool.  The average players stick is way too long. The rule of thumb is to the nose when in bare feet, however the great players who have sufficient “Sumo” skating posture will have a shorter stick (Gretzky was a few inches under his chin). Stick quickness is so important in such a fast paced sport. 1/100th of a second is often the difference between possessing and chasing the puck. An eighth of an inch of the shaft and the blade can do amazing things to enhance puck-handling execution. Cut off old sticks to test various lengths to determine what best suits you. When in proper Sumo position your stick blade should be flat on the ice.

The hook on the blade is vital to your ability to quickly release your shot, and handle the puck in all situations. Most sticks have hooks too big to be effective in all areas.  Check the whip of the blade shaft. Different whip will suit the specialties of different player’s. Tape your stick regularly and keep the bottom of the blade clean and un frayed.

There is no more difficult game to play than hockey. Proper fitting skates and sticks are critical to performance excellence.
